Human Cancer Models Initiative (HCMI): Navigating the HCMI Searchable Catalog and Accessing HCMI Data at NCI’s Genomic Data Commons Webinar

August 17, 2023, at 12:00 PM ET

Abstract

The Human Cancer Models Initiative (HCMI) is an international consortium with the goal of generating patient-derived next-generation cancer models (NGCMs) from diverse tumor types as a community resource. HCMI addresses deficiencies in traditional cell lines by collecting patients’ clinical and biospecimen data and providing molecular characterization of the parent tumor, case-matched normal tissue, and the NGCM. These data are harmonized and available at NCI’s Genomic Data Commons (GDC). The HCMI Searchable Catalog is an online resource that allows users to query and identify models using various data elements including clinical and molecular characterization data. The HCMI models and culture protocols are made available to the research community through ATCC. Altogether, the HCMI models and associated data serve as a resource to the scientific community.

Key Points

  • The HCMI program provides the research community with high-quality NGCMs via ATCC and associated clinical, biospecimen, and molecular characterization data via NCI’s Genomic Data Commons.
  • HCMI molecular characterization includes whole genome sequencing (WGS), whole exome sequencing (WXS), RNA-seq, and methylation array and can be accessed using a variety of GDC services and tools.
  • Search and identify models of interest on the HCMI Searchable Catalog.

Headshot of Dr Eva Tonsing-Carter

Eva Tonsing-Carter, PhD

Scientific Program Manager, National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Genomics

Eva Tonsing-Carter, PhD, is a Scientific Program Manager in the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Genomics. She played an important role in the launch of the Human Cancer Models Initiative’s (HCMI) Searchable Catalog and the continued management of the Catalog’s web content. She led the generation of cancer type-specific case report forms used to collect the clinical data that accompanies the HCMI models. Dr. Tonsing-Carter received her PhD in pharmacology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis where she focused on understanding the role of Mdm2 signaling blockade in a metastatic triple-negative breast cancer orthotopic mouse model. She completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago where she examined the function of glucocorticoid receptor modulation on estrogen receptor activity in breast cancer models.

Headshot of Dr Bill Wysocki

Bill Wysocki, PhD

Lead for User and Data Services, Genomic Data Commons in the Center for Translational Data Science (University of Chicago)

Bill Wysocki, PhD, is the lead for User and Data Services at the Genomic Data Commons in the Center for Translational Data Science (University of Chicago). Before joining the GDC team, Bill studied bamboo genomics and phylogenetic relationships at Northern Illinois University where he received his PhD in 2016. Prior to that, he completed a MS in Biology from Roosevelt University where he helped build the first continent-wide relational database between African plants and dispersal agents.
